Concept Idea 1
about 3 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded. We would like to hear from you about the concept ideas for the bridge, including active transportation connections, open space amenities and landscaping.
Considerations:
- Most direct access to possible active transportation connections to the west
- Longest bridge length (cost)
- Possible overlap with Terwillegar Drive Expansion
- Furthest from homes on the north side but close proximity to backyards on south side
Questions:
- What do you like about Concept Idea 1?
- Is there anything missing?
- What improvements would you make?
- What amenities would you like to see near the bridge crossing and along the active transportation connections?
How to participate: Share your ideas and read what others have suggested. Show your support by ‘liking’ the ideas that inspire you the most.
BurrowvilleWhomiteabout 3 years agoEcho HOA walkway comments as poor access for bikes however street access to trailhead is convenient.
HOA walkway should only be for walking and should have signage to reflect this.
0 comment1CAFPabout 3 years agoI think this bridge will cost more (length ) and is too close to the expansion. So is not a good idea.
0 comment4johameabout 3 years agoI am vehemently opposed to the walk way behind the residence on the south side of the freeway. they can escape to north side freeway
1 comment4Long term Brooksiderabout 3 years agoUse fill from road to enhance toboggan hill in South Brookside and north up berm. Hide mountain bike park west of hill

2 comments1Residentsabout 3 years agoMany Brooksiders think this bridge is not needed and a huge waste of money. Option 1 is best as least disruptive to homes on 142 st.
Bridge egress Should link to existing path on berm west of 142 street alongside Whitemud. Cyclists should use that path rather than using 142 Street. Adding designated bike lanes to 142 street is not needed

Concept Idea 2
about 3 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded. We would like to hear from you about the concept ideas for the bridge, including active transportation connections, open space amenities and landscaping.
Considerations:
- Direct connection to 53 Ave Shared-Use Path
- Possible utility conflicts
- Close proximity to homes on north side and backyards on south side
- Close proximity to existing Homeowners Association walkway and shared-use path on south side
Questions:
- What do you like about Concept Idea 2?
- Is there anything missing?
- What improvements would you make?
- What amenities would you like to see near the bridge crossing and along the active transportation connections?

W Shoresabout 3 years agoI am strongly in favour of this project. I prefer option 2 as it has a shorter span and and connects more directly to existing paths.
0 comment1cyclistabout 3 years agoPlease reconsider going under the Rainbow Valley Bridge
I am a cyclist and I do support a network of active transport but as a taxpayer, I think that a cycle/pedestrian bridge seems unnecessarily expensive when we have no data on the potential usage. I propose that the city reconsider a bike trail parallel to the Whitemud Freeway on the south side of the freeway, connecting under the Rainbow Valley Bridge to existing trails. This would allow us to measure the actual usage of a slightly longer route before we spend significantly more on an overhead bridge. The city has stated in their presentation that the "under the Rainbow Valley bridge" is not an option for technical, accessibility, and environmental reasons. However technically I'm sure whatever engineering issues arise can be overcome. Accessibility wise - cyclists are used to pedaling up hills when commuting to the river valley/university/downtown. Please realize that any cyclist/pedestrian/stroller/scooter etc. must go up/down the steep grade at the far north Brookside hill (near the Fox Farm) to access any point north of Brookside, or up/down the east bike/pedestrian path (running along side the Whitemud on the north side of the freeway) to access Snow Valley, Landsdowne, and east or southeast destinations. Finally from an environmental perspective, the parking lot currently under the Rainbow Valley Bridge, Snow Valley Ski Hill, and the City Campground (which was approved for a Christmas light show drive-through this winter), seem to be exempt from environmental protection, so I'm not sure why a bike/pedestrian path would be considered more environmentally damaging than these developments that already exist.
2 comments2Patabout 3 years agoIncreased through traffic, litter, crime and who pays for it? Will the City Properly maintain this area and pay for the maintenance capital
To follow up on an other comment, the pathway south into Brookview that this option is proposed to connect to is to narrow to accommodate a multi-use option. This is a small path built, paid for and maintained by BHOA (the fees for the Brookview home owners were just increased again this year). This increased use will undoubtedly result in more costs to the home owners as the City continues to offload costs onto communities. Keep the multi-use activities around our community and not through it. This will meet the goals of the project and not unduly create the through traffic, litter and potential increased crime and costs inside the community.
0 comment1Kernabout 3 years agoConcept 2
I would prefer concept 2, this visually looks the most attractive and monetarily this also isn’t the most expensive either. I also like all the options for the amenities (ie. Garbage, bench, lighting etc).
0 comment2Shreddyabout 3 years agoOption 2 is the best, especially if you look at Strava Heat Map and see where people currently cycle.
Can we please have Mike Nickel there for the ribbon cutting. Please?

Concept Idea 3
about 3 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded. We would like to hear from you about the concept ideas for the bridge, including active transportation connections, open space amenities and landscaping.
Considerations:
- Short bridge length
- Further from homes on north side, close proximity to backyards on south side
- Least direct connection
- Moving too far east may require approach ramps, impacting cost and accessibility
Questions:
- What do you like about Concept Idea 3?
- Is there anything missing?
- What improvements would you make?
- What amenities would you like to see near the bridge crossing and along the active transportation connections?

Sherriabout 3 years agoBridge must connect to wide Multi Use paths not regular sidewalks and streets.
This option meets up with the exiting path on the north side of Whitemud and connects to other multi use path ways. With the multi use path a multi issue path around Terwillegar Drive there is no need to open the sound barrier along the Whitemud. Plus the there is already an existing multi use path near the top of the bank behind Brass III that people currently use and are familiar with that connects to other multi use paths.
0 comment0CAFPabout 3 years agoConcept 3 doesn’t connect well with existing structures, will have great inclines which are harder for biking in winter, is more costly
2 comments8StephenRabout 3 years agoLeast direct route
Makes walking/cycling less efficient. Also, elevation change may be burdensome for kids or older people.
0 comment0NGNeighbourabout 3 years agoDo not like concept 3.
This concept doesn't line up as well with 142 St. Don't like potential slopes on this concept and additional paths that would be needed to deal with the elevation changes which assume will add to the cost of this option.
0 comment2AF_Brooksideabout 3 years agoDon't like the extra length this route adds to north/south connection. Access ramps impact to naturalized areas would be a shame.
