Concept Idea 1
over 3 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded. We would like to hear from you about the concept ideas for the bridge, including active transportation connections, open space amenities and landscaping.
For a downloadable pdf of Concept Idea 1, visit the Document Library
Considerations:
- Most direct access to possible active transportation connections to the west
- Longest bridge length (cost)
- Possible overlap with Terwillegar Drive Expansion
- Furthest from homes on the north side but close proximity to backyards on south side
Questions:
- What do you like about Concept Idea 1?
- Is there anything missing?
- What improvements would you make?
- What amenities would you like to see near the bridge crossing and along the active transportation connections?
How to participate: Share your ideas and read what others have suggested. Show your support by ‘liking’ the ideas that inspire you the most.
StephenRover 3 years agoReasonable option
Provides efficient crossing point. May make sense to orient bridge clockwise and have the north starting point more northeast and south starting point more southwest. Makes for the most direct option
1 comment0Residentsover 3 years agoBridge is not needed at all but this is Worst of the 3 options.
This option would be very disruptive to homes at the south end of 142 street. Brooksiders would not want to lose the very popular toboggan hill there. Bridge Would also bring more traffic, vandalism and crime to neighbourhoods on both sides.
5 comments0irismover 3 years agoThe best of the three options. Safety and Least Impact on Brookside and Brookview Neighborhoods over Convenience
Thoughtful planning and consideration for bridge to be as far west as possible to have least impact on Brookside and Brookview residents. Multi use path for pedestrians/cyclists to follow the berm on both sides as far away from homes on south side and bikers not going down 142 residential street. This is a connection link, not a destination on either side of the bridge so alternative to go around instead of through or close by should be considered. Doing otherwise is not enhancing neighborhoods. Instead, it would be having a negative impact on them!
0 comment15germsover 3 years agoMakes the most sense of the 3 options
This option is the most direct alignment on the North side of the Whitemud. The biggest challenge of this Project is where/how to connect it to trails or streets in Brookview. once upon a time 142street was the main entrance to Riverbend (Brookside) so it can manage the bike traffic that the bridge would facilitate.
0 comment0Patover 3 years agoMost Viable Option
This option provides the most direct access to the multi use path that will be used by hundreds of residence in Brookview and communities further south. It also keeps the through traffic out of the community and on the multi-use path, where it belongs. The cost will likely be comparable given it will be complete at the same time as the Terwillegar interchange work.

Concept Idea 2
over 3 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded. We would like to hear from you about the concept ideas for the bridge, including active transportation connections, open space amenities and landscaping.
- Direct connection to 53 Ave Shared-Use Path
- Possible utility conflicts
- Close proximity to homes on north side and backyards on south side
- Close proximity to existing Homeowners Association walkway and shared-use path on south side
Questions:
- What do you like about Concept Idea 2?
- Is there anything missing?
- What improvements would you make?
- What amenities would you like to see near the bridge crossing and along the active transportation connections?

Shelly Stevensover 3 years agoThe pedestrian bridge should be built prior to the construction of the overpass at 40 Ave/Terwillegar Dr.
The 40 Ave intersection has been dangerous for pedestrians for decades. Having the pedestrian bridge in place prior to the constructions will provide a safe, alternate route from Bulyea Heights for students going to Riverbend Junior High and the UofA.
2 comments9Brookview perspectiveover 3 years agoOption 2 seems like the only logical choice. Why is the bridge not lined up with the homeowners walkway and 142 street anyways. (1/2)
3 comments5Brendanl15over 3 years agoThe shared use is too close to the freeway on the north edge. It feels like I'm on a shoulder of a highway, not safe. Best concept overall.
2 comments2A_Cycle_Commuterover 3 years agoShortest jog from 142 is good
For a cycle commuter, the straightest path connecting to 142 is preferred. I didn't get an explanation on why options 1 & 2 fall West and East of straight, but I trust there are good reasons. I trust the engineers to find a location that considers convenience and cost, including bridge length and moving utilities.
0 comment1Cairobodyover 3 years agoCity standard wayfinding signs, like now in the river valley, should be on both ends of the bridge
Signs can direct to Brookside Hill, the University, Snow Valley, Southgate Mall, Riverbend Square, Terwillegar Rec Centre, Terwillegar Park and the businesses on 23rd Ave. Navigating through the neighbourhoods isn't the easiest and the signs could help alot

Concept Idea 3
over 3 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded. We would like to hear from you about the concept ideas for the bridge, including active transportation connections, open space amenities and landscaping.
- Short bridge length
- Further from homes on north side, close proximity to backyards on south side
- Least direct connection
- Moving too far east may require approach ramps, impacting cost and accessibility
Questions:
- What do you like about Concept Idea 3?
- Is there anything missing?
- What improvements would you make?
- What amenities would you like to see near the bridge crossing and along the active transportation connections?

Patover 3 years agoViable Option
This option meets the goals of the project and keeps the traffic to the multi-use path. It is positive that the path connects closer to the ravine. Negative could be for users that are only commuting. Good connection for ravine use. Would have to see how the elevation changes are handled to ensure that it is bike, walk and over all accessible for all.
0 comment0NGNeighbourover 3 years agoDo not like concept 3.
This concept doesn't line up as well with 142 St. Don't like potential slopes on this concept and additional paths that would be needed to deal with the elevation changes which assume will add to the cost of this option.
0 comment2StephenRover 3 years agoLeast direct route
Makes walking/cycling less efficient. Also, elevation change may be burdensome for kids or older people.
0 comment0AF_Brooksideover 3 years agoDon't like the extra length this route adds to north/south connection. Access ramps impact to naturalized areas would be a shame.
0 comment3Cairobodyover 3 years agoIf this option is chosen, then the path between the bridge and the Terwillegar SUP should be a paved SUP as well
