  • When the roads are torn-up, I want to know if you will coordinate with Epcor to improve drainage. In the past, drainage has proven to be quite inadequate on the streets and in the lanes leading to flooding on more than one occasion. And given climate change, these events are likely to recur with greater frequency and intensity. Thanks,

Prior to Neighbourhood Renewal, utility companies including EPCOR Drainage complete any major repairs or upgrades. We coordinate reconstruction efforts with our utility partners to ensure a complete final product.

During neighbourhood reconstruction, the City of Edmonton will improve surface drainage through design and construction. We are collaborating with EPCOR Drainage to incorporate Low Impact Development (LID) opportunities as a part of neighbourhood renewal. LID is an approach to managing stormwater that mimics nature, using trees, plants, structured soil to slow, clean and absorb rainfall.

  • How do you determine what suggestions community members have, for example in terms of speed limits or speed bumps, will be followed. Do community members get to vote on something like this?

RM asked over 4 years ago

The City of Edmonton is committed to involving residents in meaningful public engagement throughout the project. As an integral part of this process, the public will provide input and suggestions that will help shape the future of Malmo Plains.

Public input and suggestions are brought to a project team meeting after each engagement activity for consideration. Public input is one of three aspects that influence the City’s decision making process: Public Input, Technical Design Standards, and City Guidelines and Policies.

Throughout Malmo Plains’ Neighbourhood Renewal, you can expect updates on what we heard and what we did with information that was provided during public engagement events. There will be 2 voting opportunities through local improvement cost-sharing provided to all Malmo Plains’ residents for sidewalk reconstruction and decorative street lights. • It would be nice to have a marked crosswalk across 51 Avenue at 116 Street on the west side. This would give safer access to the westbound bus stop and paved trail on the north side of 51 Avenue. Currently cars do not generally yield to pedestrians possibly due to the fact that this is a t-intersection.

Thanks for your input and interest in Malmo Plains Neighbourhood renewal, your feedback is important to us. Community engagement and feedback will help to shape the vision and guiding principles that will guide this project.

Project decisions will be made with consideration of Public Input, Technical Requirements and City Policies and Programs.

  • Green space malmo road and 49 Avenue would be a great place for a community garden could this be considered.

Thanks for the feedback! City-owned public and open spaces are one of the items explored during the visioning phase of neighbourhood renewal. Your input will be incorporated with the other input heard at this phase along with technical requirements and our City policies to meet the needs for the Malmo Plains community.
