Edmonton’s climate is changing and there is an urgent need for continued and accelerated action to build resilience. One major component of this necessary action is transportation and urban planning, which together have been identified as one of three major areas for GHG reductions.

Climate resilience is the ability to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change and climate-related events.

  • Adaptation means making adjustments to social, economic and environmental practices to reduce vulnerabilities to climate change.

  • Mitigation involves using new strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Together, adaptation and mitigation action enable sustainable development and improved well-being in the face of a changing climate.

The Climate Resilience Planning and Development Action Plan (the Action Plan) identifies 15 actions the City can take to include climate adaptation and mitigation in the City’s planning and development processes. These actions will be vital to advancing the City’s ongoing work to address climate change as outlined in Climate Resilient Edmonton: Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan and Edmonton’s Community Energy Transition Strategy.

The plan’s 15 Actions are centered around four outcomes:

  • Resilient Neighbourhoods

  • Resilient Site & Landscaping Design

  • Resilient Buildings

  • Resilient City Processes

The draft actions were developed through background research, internal reviews with Administration, and two targeted stakeholder engagement sessions in April 2024 with stakeholders. In the current engagement phase, we would like to hear your thoughts on the draft actions from the Action Plan.

The results of this engagement will be used to further refine and prioritize the draft actions and inform the development of the Climate Resilience Planning and Development Action Plan.

After the draft Action Plan is presented to Council in October 2024, the actions will be assigned to various teams in Administration to implement, supported by ongoing engagement with residents and stakeholders and regular monitoring and reporting.
