The City of Edmonton is dedicated to supporting a vibrant and inclusive downtown community. We are currently in the planning phase of developing an Entertainment District on Rice Howard Way. This means that during summer weekends, the street would be restricted to pedestrian-only access and entertainment and food and alcohol service could be enjoyed outdoors. This would help bring an abundance of cultural vibrancy and expanded economic activity to downtown.

When would it take place?

The proposed Entertainment District would take place during the summer months. Rice Howard Way (East/West) would be closed to vehicle traffic from approximately 11 a.m. on Friday to 11 a.m. on Sunday. North/South traffic would be able to flow on 100A Street during these times, and parkade access would be maintained.

What would it include?

The Entertainment District would include entertainment (such as music, movies, games or other activities) during the time it is pedestrian-only access, and patrons from Rice Howard Way businesses will have the option to bring their food and drinks to the street, where they can enjoy the entertainment and mingle with others.

We want to hear from you! Anyone who works, lives, or plays Downtown is encouraged to participate in our five-minute online survey and give feedback on the proposed Downtown Entertainment District on Rice Howard Way (101A Ave).

    Frequently Asked Questions

    • What is an Entertainment District? The Government of Alberta has enacted legislation that allows municipalities to create a bylaw allowing what is called an “Entertainment District” in their city, with defined boundaries. The Entertainment District designation allows patrons to take their drink from a licensed establishment out into the defined district. The City would enhance this experience by organizing entertainment on the closed street to create a fun and inviting space for patrons.
    • How late will entertainment go on Friday and Saturday nights? Any entertainment on the street would comply with City of Edmonton bylaws for noise (75 decibels, ending at 10 p.m.).
    • How does this impact street parking on Rice Howard Way? Street parking on Rice Howard Way (East/West) will not be accessible when the Entertainment District is active. However, Rice Howard Way (North/South) parking and parkades in the immediate area will remain accessible via 102 Ave/100 A St NW.
    • Can we bring food and drinks out onto the street? Yes. If you decide to leave an establishment within the Entertainment District and venture into the closed street to enjoy the activities, businesses  would provide a plastic cup to avoid the use of glass on the street. Similarly, food can be taken out onto the street using to-go containers provided by the business.
    • Can I bring my own alcohol down to Rice Howard Way and drink it on the street with everyone else? No. Only alcohol purchased from one of the licensed establishments within the Entertainment District is allowed in the Entertainment District.
    • Can I leave the Entertainment District with my drink? No. Anyone with open alcohol outside the boundaries of the Entertainment District will be asked to dispose of it and may be fined.
    • Will there be security on site? Yes.
