Grovenor Street Lab

February 5, 2024 Update

Project Background

In 2022, Grovenor residents conducted community-led engagement to understand neighbourhood traffic safety concerns. As a result of this engagement, adaptable traffic safety measures were installed, such as parklets and curb extensions.

Grovenor residents continued to express traffic safety concerns. To learn more about these concerns, the City conducted neighbourhood-wide public engagement between August and September, 2023.

Project Update

The City asked residents to share their traffic safety concerns and perspectives through a survey, an online map and an in-person Walk and Roll Audit. The survey had 30 responses, six contributors placed 13 different pins on the map and five participants attended the Walk and Roll Audit on August 29. The results of this engagement are available in this What We Heard Report

After reviewing the resident feedback from both phases of engagement and combining it with technical data and engineering expertise, the City has determined that additional Street Lab measures are not suitable to address traffic safety concerns in Grovenor at this time.

Reasons for this decision include:

1. Ongoing LRT construction disrupting natural traffic patterns.

  • Residents expressed concerns about shortcutting on 103 Avenue and 143 to 148 Street due to LRT construction. During the construction process, detours and closures will change which will also affect  traffic patterns and change the location and levels of issues. While drivers may be using these roads as a shortcut during construction, it is anticipated that traffic will return to acceptable levels once construction is completed and the LRT is operational.

2. Upcoming Active Transportation Network planning in the neighbourhood.

  • The active transportation network expansion is intended to expand the City’s active transportation network with routes that are safe, accessible and predictable for people of all ages and abilities. We will share our learnings with the Active Transportation team to assist with their planning for Grovenor.

3. Existing traffic calming measures already installed as a result of the previous community-led Vision Zero Street Lab in Grovenor, including curb extensions at key locations of concern.

  • Traffic safety concerns on 144 Street have been addressed using curb extensions and parklets.

Information gathered during the engagement will be used to inform any future Safe Mobility programs.

Project Update: Engagement Complete

The City conducted engagement from August 16 to September 6. And all tools are now closed.

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to share their experiences and insights with us.

City staff are now working to review the results and compile a What We Heard report to share our learnings back with community members. When available, the report will be added to this page.

Your feedback will be used in conjunction with technical data to decide if a Street Lab is the best solution for the street safety issues the neighbourhood is facing, or if another Safe Mobility program would be more appropriate.

  • CLOSED: This survey has concluded.

The City of Edmonton’s Vision Zero Street Labs use adaptable measures to improve street safety at the neighbourhood level. These adaptable measures can reduce speeding, shortcutting, and other risky driving behaviours.

A Street Lab is currently being explored in Grovenor, and we would like to hear from you about what you’re experiencing in the neighbourhood.

The purpose of this survey is to:

    • Understand what and where the traffic safety concerns are in the neighbourhood

    • Gain insight into possible traffic safety solutions

You can also provide location-specific feedback using the interactive mapping tool
