Internal Pathway Design
about 3 years agoCLOSED: This brainstormer has concluded.Better connections, safer circulation, and improved accessibility were all important factors that went into the design of the project. Tell us what you think about the Internal Pathway design:
- What do you like about the design?
- Is there anything missing?
- What changes would you suggest to improve the design?

It would be nice to have a swimmable lake with a beach and sans geese.

You guys suggest the infrastructure in Hawrelak is aging. That's incorrect. Perhaps the pavillion and amphitheatre may need to be looked at, but that is the only infrastructure worth considering. People want to bike? Nice loop around the lake where you can cycle safely as it's a low speed limit for drivers. Run/walk or even mountain bike on the dirt paths. We absolutely do not need a paved path on what is now grass going aorund the lake. I don't know who thinks up these dumb ideas. If I had it my way, this project for 'Hawrelak rehabilitation' would not exist and the project coordinator would have to figure out something else to do. That someone is employed by the city to actively look at ways of making it less appeasing, less environmentally friendly (yes, paving in nature is anti-environemental) is absurd. This project and propsal is a waste of time for the project coordinator and city as a whole. I've run 100's, perhaps 1000's of miles in my life around Hawrelak. It's beautiful. I've cycled around it too. Now you want to destroy it. Leave this gem we have in the city alone. The right thing to do would be to recognize the foolishness of this proposal and resign your position. Sadly, you will continue to stay employed by the city as it is in your economic interest to stay employed. I'm sorry but this project is an exmaple of a waste of time for you and all involved. Find another job at the city, this one should not exist. If I sound too blunt, well, this is 100% honest from my behalf. I do not support this proposal whatsoever.

With the sun going down so early i feel parks and pathways would be better utilized if they were more lit. Trees and pathways, Hawrelak Park used to have a winter light festival and lights on all the trees during the winter months, I strongly feel that this should be renewed. I would be more likely to spend more time in the park if it were brightly lit in the dark. I also feel that the pavilion closes way to early every day and should be open later so people can get something to eat or drink during the evening to better enjoy the services in the park. I also feel that there are so many amazing local restaurants that something more innovative than burgers and fries would elevate the Ambience of the park . The park has so much potential to be a major attraction 12 months of the year, but is poorly under utilized. We should be striving for a “Central Park” type feel. Being that Edmonton is going after a winter city vibe I feel it should be more of a priority especially with COVID 19 not allowing indoor activities.

I prefer Option B, hoping it would have better flow along the Multi Use Paths
0 comment1Sarahabout 3 years agoSwimmable Lake, keep woodchip/dirt path by the river unpaved
A swimmable Lake would be an excellent resource for Edmontonians, and keep people in the city supporting our local economy during the summer months. Keeping the woodchip/gravel/dirt path by the river unpaved supports joint protection for local long distance runners. Increasing accessibility is important, but please also keep some natural trails in the park.
0 comment2ssssssover 3 years agoPLEASE keep the historic buildings
We do not have many of the beautiful and unique mid-century buildings left, like the ones in Hawrelak Park. If work needs to be done, please remediate the buildings instead of tearing them down and building from scratch. The buildings are so beautiful, we need to preserve them!
1 comment6CGhodsiover 3 years agoI do not like this idea. The area of the proposed trail is a thin buffer that is important for wildlife movement.
0 comment3ClippertonAover 3 years agoPermanent body of swimable water
I'd love to see city consider making the lake a permanent body of swimable water. There are really no publicly accessible bodies of water in the city available for open water swimmers (other than the river)
