Naturalization and Tree Planting
Engagement has concluded
May 30 Update:
The City conducted engagement from May 5 - May 29. The survey and map tool are now closed. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and insights with us. City staff are now working to review the results and compile a What We Heard report. When available, the report will be added to this page.
Phase 2 Public Engagement
Edmonton is growing and we are committed to being Greener as We Grow. Making Edmonton greener will protect our health, environment and quality of life. To make this happen, the City of Edmonton is expanding the urban forest - planting two million new trees as the population grows and increasing canopy coverage by 20 per cent. To accomplish these goals, the City is developing a plan for both naturalization and boulevard and open space tree planting.
Phase 1 Public Engagement included a city-wide survey to help us better understand how you use green spaces, as well the level of support for boulevard and open space tree planting. A What We Heard report summarizing the first phase of engagement is available here.
In Phase 2 Public Engagement, we want to understand how you currently use open spaces in your neighbourhood and where you see opportunities to naturalize or plant trees. Think long-term - how can we make Edmonton greener?
Share your experience!
There are several engagement opportunities between May 5 - 29 to provide your feedback:
Place a pin on our map.
Take the short survey.
Attend any of our pop-up events listed under key dates.
Attend the online public meeting on May 24 from 12-1:30pm. Register here.
How Your Feedback Will Be Used
Your feedback will contribute to the development of the new Naturalization, Reclamation and Restoration Plan (NRRP) and mapping database to determine where to plant. Insights shared will also help improve the City’s communications and education work around naturalization and planting boulevard and open space trees.
Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.
For more information, see the project web page New Urban Trees and Naturalization.
Map
This map shows where NEW naturalization and boulevard and open space tree planting may take place over the next 8 years.
The green layer on the map shows potential new naturalization areas. Naturalization refers to an ecologically-based approach to landscape management that transforms maintained or manicured space to a more natural state.
The yellow layer on the map shows potential new boulevard and open space trees planting areas. Boulevard and Open Space Trees are maintained trees growing on City-owned properties such as boulevards, medians and open space parks.
We invite you to drag and drop pins to tell us:
1. How you currently use these green spaces.
