Help Us Create Edmonton's Waste Reduction Roadmap

Review Roadmap '30's proposed actions and help shape the future of Edmonton waste reduction. Share your thoughts, make suggestions, and have your say!

What we waste shapes our future. Let's work together to reduce it and shape something better!

The City of Edmonton is currently developing Roadmap ‘30, the second Waste Reduction Roadmap to support the commitments of the 25-year Waste Strategy.

Roadmap '30 will guide our actions to reduce waste from 2026 to 2030. It includes ideas to help reduce food waste, make it easier to reuse and donate items, and reduce waste at events and other everyday places.

Roadmap ‘30 will also consist of actions that meet the top three levels (rethink/redesign, reduce, and reuse) of Edmonton’s waste hierarchy.

We’ve created a list of actions based on expert recommendations, research, and proven successes from other cities. Check them out in the "Roadmap '30 Proposed Actions" tab below, or within this downloadable pdf! Now, we want your input.

  • Are these actions helpful? What would you change? Which would you prefer to see?
  • Your input will help us decide which actions are ready to move forward to shape waste reduction until 2030

You can review the actions and share your thoughts below. Also, take our survey here!

Roadmap '30 Proposed Actions

Reduce Food and Yard Waste

Improve household food rescue and redistribution:

  • Work with food organizations and Edmontonians to minimize food waste by finding opportunities to rescue or distribute surplus household food.
  • Promote and develop resources that support and encourage residents to share surplus household food with food rescue organizations.

Reduce edible food wasted at home:

  • Increase awareness of how residents can reduce food waste at home by creating and sharing information, guides, and tips.
  • Work with City partners to share food waste reduction tips with residents through cooking and baking classes offered in Edmonton.

Reduce yard waste:

  • Encourage and educate residents on home composting, using organic yard materials (e.g., grass, leaves) rather than disposing of them.
  • Connecting residents to organizations that can put excess homegrown fruit and vegetables to good use.

Promote Reuse and Repair

Support the preservation and life extension of products.

Understand, promote, and support donation sites and infrastructure:

  • Research the waste reduction impacts of “buy nothing” communities, collaborate with reuse organizations to understand material flows, map material donation sites, and identify barriers to maximizing thrift and reuse.
  • Look at opportunities to work with external partners to expand reusable item drop-off locations, improving reuse accessibility and participation.

Give stuff a second life by supporting sharing, swapping, repair, and reuse partnerships:

  • Develop resources and training to support residents in multi-unit buildings to reduce their waste through sharing, swapping, repairing, and donating materials.
  • Add good, better and best practices for reducing, reusing and donating goods in existing City communications and resources.
  • Enhance and promote donations of reusable and durable items at City drop-off events and facilities.
  • Develop new resources, events, and spaces for reusing, repairing, or swapping, including investigating curbside giveaway events andtextile collection pilot projects.
  • Support the creation and expansion of a ‘library-of-things’ where residents can borrow items (such as tools, toys, kitchen appliances) in collaboration with partner organizations.

Encourage the Adoption of Reusable Items

  • Support and incentivize businesses to use reusable cups on-site.

Support Public Events to Reduce Waste

  • Establish event guidelines for event organizers to determine how to reduce their event waste.
  • Support events in preventing and reducing waste with in-person education and resources, consultation and other supports.
