Urban Tree Canopy Expansion Project

As Edmontonians, we value and understand the importance of the city’s urban forest. The City Plan - Connect Edmonton Vision 2050 - has identified the need to Move Greener as we Grow as one of the five transformational directions, or Big City Moves. Planting trees helps address climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the air and contributes to purifying the air we breathe, supports urban biodiversity and resilient ecosystems, provides and preserves wildlife habitat and improves our quality of living.

The Urban Tree Canopy Expansion project provides a unique opportunity to carry out significant tree planting over the next two years to expand our urban tree canopy, moving towards the City’s target of 2 million new trees by 2040. In 2021 and 2022, a diverse selection of 3000 new trees will be planted per year on public land throughout the city. These new trees are in addition to the 3000 replacement trees that are planted each year. Tree planting for 2021 is currently underway.

We invite you to participate in this pilot project and to help the City identify sustainable locations where new trees could be planted in 2022. Visit the map below to share your feedback until June 14.
