Yellowhead Trail - St. Albert Trail to 97 St. - Sherbrooke Neighbourhood

Consultation has concluded

Yellowhead Trail is being converted to a freeway. We are sharing the preliminary design for the St. Albert Trail to 97 Street segment of the Yellowhead Trail conversion, as well as specific design details for the Sherbrooke neighbourhood. We are looking for your feedback on both. This survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete and will be available from May 25 until June 21, 2023.

Sherbrooke Preliminary Design

The preliminary design for Sherbrooke includes new active transportation (walk, bike, wheel) connections, open space, and a noise wall in Sherbrooke. The design includes the following:

  • Removal of existing berm and vegetation along Yellowhead Trail to accommodate the new eastbound service road between St. Albert Trail and 127 Street and the 127 Street eastbound exit ramp.
  • A new noise wall of varying height with a new lower berm along Yellowhead Trail. The top of the new noise wall will be at the same elevation as the top of the existing noise wall.
  • A new illuminated shared-use path along the south side of Yellowhead Trail connecting Sherbooke to Prince Charles and Blatchford to the east, and Dovercourt to the west. The shared-use path will also connect to sidewalks along 127 Street and St. Albert Trail.
  • Maintaining existing boulevard trees along 124 Avenue and planting new trees and landscaping, where possible.

St. Albert Trail and 97 Street Preliminary Design

As part of the Yellowhead Trail Freeway Conversion Program, the City of Edmonton has developed the preliminary design for the segment between St. Albert Trail and 97 Street.

We suggest that you review all of the online materials on this page prior to completing this survey.

The plan for this section of Yellowhead Trail includes:

  • Removal of all traffic signals and direct accesses to Yellowhead Trail
  • Two new interchanges: one at 127 Street and one at 121 Street (previously referred to as the 115 Street interchange)
  • New roadway connections from 121 Street and 107 Street to the 121 Street interchange to provide access to Yellowhead Trail
  • New service roads parallel to Yellowhead Trail to manage traffic flow in the west part of the project area
  • A new shared-use path on the south side of Yellowhead Trail from 142 Street to 107 Street

The preliminary design retains most of the features outlined in the concept plan that we shared with you in 2021, however there are a few changes to this plan of note:

  • A separate pedestrian bridge crossing Yellowhead Trail at the new 127 Street interchange to improve the north-south active transportation connection.
  • The 121 Street interchange has changed from an underpass to an overpass, with Yellowhead Trail going over 121 Street. This change improves the drainage design, allowing for better integration with other drainage infrastructure in the area, eliminating the need for a large storage tank and reducing overall construction costs.
  • Number of traffic lanes and their configuration within the project limits were optimized.
