GOlsonover 3 years agoMake the bridge align with the existing walkway in Brookview that ends at the concrete wall on south side of Whitemud.
The infrastructure is there. I currently have to traverse the hill and cross under the bridge to get to the path and go east or west on the paved path to exit my neighborhood to go downtown or to Old Strathcona by bike.

Too often trails in Edmonton do not recognize that cyclists like fast and easy crossings, with no reason to slow down. Please ensure there is a straight access onto and off the bridge, and prioritize that it doesn't introduce an unnecessary hill to daily commutes for decades to come. Do not locate the access down the Rainbow Valley hill.

The bridge is great to connect over Whitemud Drive but let's make sure it aligns and connects to a wide path for all users and multiple users, not the street crescent in the old plans. There is a multi-use wide trail behind the Brass III Development on the river valley bank that is accessible if the bridge were to align with that path. It needs to connect to the wide multi-use trail and paths built along Terwillegar Drive towards the TRC. The bridge should not be built to empty into a road. It must empty to connect with a large wide multi use path that connects with the ones south of Riverbend Road otherwise it is just a bandaid solution and displacing users to more roadways and traffic.

The main webpage for the 142 Street Pedestrian/Cyclist Bridge project states “Although the previously assumed location is at 142 Street, this location will be reviewed and validated as part of this project.” It is my understanding that this provides an excellent opportunity to consider alternatives for the location and design of the Bridge to connect Brookside and Bulyea Heights - a project supported by many in both communities. I am aware of many residents living on 142 Street who are directly impacted and concerned that their front street will become a major, high volume cycling ‘corridor’. However, they are willing to collaborate with cyclists and others to explore new options for the location of a bridge that would meet the needs of those who just want to commute “through to somewhere else” without taking away the safety and quality of life on 142 Street in south Brookside. With the Terwillegar Drive expansion plan underway and a proposed upgrade to the Rainbow Valley bridge in the works, surely new possibilities exist, and creative and cooperative people taking a fresh look can find a win-win solution for all!

Our Project
A new pedestrian/cyclist bridge over Whitemud Drive between the Whitemud Drive/Terwillegar Drive interchange and Whitemud Creek is being planned.
The bridge will improve active mode connections, providing better access City-wide, within Southwest Edmonton and to the river valley and ravine trail network. It will also enhance transportation and recreational opportunities for pedestrians, cyclists and other active mode users.
In addition to a bridge, the project includes upgrades to the open spaces and active mode connections.
