Plans to revitalize 99 Street between 102 Avenue and Jasper Avenue are underway!

The design for this portion of 99 Street will improve active transportation in the area, encourage walkability and support downtown vibrancy. The aged waterproofing membrane on the Stanley A. Milner Library parkade under 99 Street will also be replaced. The project supports the vision for a green, walkable downtown and includes adequate space for comfortable pedestrian movements and a two-way bike lane connecting Jasper Avenue and 102 Avenue. Two-way vehicle traffic, on-street parking and access to the area’s various parking facilities will be maintained.

In addition to the information on this page, please view the 99 Street concept design booklet.

I very much appreciate the need to revitalise 99 street between 102 Ave and Jasper. But what a pale, uninspired, ugly renders the City has presented. Who the hell was employed to create this series of amateur renders. Does the City want to inspire people for this project? This street needs a lot of work to try and enliven the most awful architecture of the Winston Churchill Library. Try again!

I love this so much. As a regular cyclist into downtown to work I find the area here a little disjointed. This would be a huge step in the right direectiohn

Concept looks great. I'm concerned about the rolled curbs along the cycle track and sidewalk that may encourage drivers and contractors to drive/park in the cycle lane and sidewalks. Perhaps some decorative bollards?

All the beautifications downtown are lovely but how are you going to bring life back to it? There is nothing for people to go down there for. This concept is just going to be another place for drunks to urinate in.

The gentle slope between car and bike lanes makes it very easy for cars to drive into the bike lane. There need to be physical barriers (bollards/jersey barriers/proper curbs) between car and bike lanes. The grooves in the bike lane parallel to direction of travel may be difficult to ride on.

Looks lovely but what about security and what are they doing about the homeless people that seem to frequent that area?

Separated bike lane is a great addition, please physically separate it from traffic/snow/loading/construction uses - this doesn't appear in the renders. Jasper Ave end should be considered, as it looks like the bike lane just dumps on to the sidewalk. Pedestrian connection to new centennial plaza should be made stronger across 99th from Shoctor Alley - more opportunity there for sure.

This should have more Complete Streets thinking.
- 102 Ave intersection is ambiguous and could be better connected with EB/WB protected lanes there.
- More physical protection (planters, bollards) for SUP and cars
- Crossings should be continuous esp. at Judy Padua Ave (so should Jasper crossing 99!)
- Judy Padua should allow WB cycling to Rice Howard Way
- Too much Loading/Parking space

Would be great to see more soft landscaping. Love the addition of more trees and the reduction in vehicle lanes. I hope the bike lane is at a consistent grade at crossings. Would be nice for the bike lane to be coloured, maybe red, to make clear it is a lane and not just a sidewalk. Overall there could be more colour in the design. I like it, but it is very grey.

There should be a focus on snow and ice removal. The new pedestrian and bike lanes cannot be used when they are extremely icy and dangerous. Money would be better spent improving current sidewalks rather than adding new ones to be maintained. Speed limits should be increased as the lower speed limits have increased traffic congestion and road rage incidents.
