Frequency is freedom
Rapid transit means
- frequencies below 10 minutes - never 15 minutes or more
- never having to check when the next bus is coming
- avoiding bus bunching and rushing to wait at timing points
- every stop is a timing point
- physically separated bus lanes

I agree. All excellent points. It currently takes me 1 - 1.5 hours to get to Edmonton South Common from Capilano and 20 minutes by car. I would NEVER choose transit over a vehicle under those conditions. Running a simple errand can eat up 4 hours of my day.
Perhaps more sitting room also, so people don't have to stand. Double-decker buses?
Some things I believe transit will never be able to compete with. Have you ever tried hauling packages or grocery shopping with transit? Not a pleasant experience. I don't know if you can ever replace cars.
