October 4, 2023 Project Update: Street Lab Plan

In March/April of this year, the City asked residents to share their traffic safety concerns and perspectives in the neighbourhood, and 128 residents responded. The results of this engagement are available in this What We Heard report. Residents stated their biggest street safety concerns are speeding, drivers not yielding to pedestrians and drivers not coming to a full stop.

We’re happy to share that the insights you shared were used to inform the Street Lab Plan below!

  • CLOSED: This survey has concluded.

As part of the City of Edmonton’s Vision Zero Street Labs Program, a Street Lab was recently installed in the Silver Berry neighbourhood in two phases. Street Labs use adaptable measures that create an opportunity to trial new solutions to increase traffic safety.

During Phase I (October 2022) of this Street Lab the following measures were installed:

Curb extensions on Silver Berry Road south of 28A Avenue, Silver Berry Road and 32 Street, and at Silver Berry Road and 29 Street

    • Curb extensions improve safety and visibility of pedestrians crossing the roadway, slow vehicles and calm traffic by visually narrowing the street, and prohibit people from parking close to the crosswalk, creating clearer sightlines for all road users

During Phase II (October 2023) of this Street Lab the following measures were installed:

Additional curb extensions on Silver Berry Road west of 33 Avenue, 32 Street south of 25 Avenue, 24 Street north of 23 Avenue, and at Silver Berry Road and 22 Street

Centre medians on Silver Berry Road west of 33A Street, on Silver Berry Road at 30 Avenue, at 28B Avenue and at 20 Street

    • Centre medians reduce speed and increase safety for pedestrians crossing the street

Adaptable speed humps on 32 Avenue west of Silver Berry Road and on 33 Avenue between Silver Berry Road and 26 Street

    • Speed humps slow traffic

The City of Edmonton would like to hear from you about your experience with this Street Lab. The survey will take approximately 5 - 10 minutes to complete depending on how much feedback you would like to share. Your feedback will be used to help us evaluate the program, make improvements for future Street Lab projects, and inform possible adjustments to Silver Berry’s Street Lab. The survey will remain open until February 28, 2024.

A Street Lab is currently being explored in the Silver Berry neighbourhood, and we would like to hear from you about what you’re experiencing in the neighbourhood.

The purpose of this survey is to:

    • Understand what and where the traffic safety concerns are in the neighbourhood

    • Gain insight into possible traffic safety solutions
